Good afternoon Edens Landing community

Staffing Update

Mrs Katia Cureton, our Year 6 teacher, has had to take extended leave until the end of term to support her ill husband. Mrs Lizanne Hitchmough, Year 5 is also on leave until the end of term also supporting an ill family member. We wish both these invaluable staff members all the best and our thoughts are with you both.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

We have elected our new PBL team members for 2018 and are currently reviewing our processes. Our Responsible Behaviour Plan is being updated to reflect ongoing changes and updates and will be uploaded to the school home page once it has been completed.

What Is Schoolwide Positive Behaviour For Learning?

Students of all ages learn best when the school that they attend is a safe, supportive and disciplined environment. For this reason, Edens Landing State School is one of many schools in South-East Queensland that uses the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework to develop a whole-school approach to student discipline.

Within this research-based framework, the pro-social behaviours that assist students to be safe and respectful learners are explicitly taught and reinforced in much the same way as academic skills. Students are likewise clearly acknowledged for meeting our expectations of positive behaviour, and provided with appropriate feedback. Put simply, teaching students the expected social behaviours and routines and then acknowledging them when they use these same behaviours is by far the most effective way to prevent management problems. Furthermore, if students use inappropriate behaviour, an array of consequences is utilised with the aim of teaching and reinforcing what we want the student to be able to demonstrate instead.

Implementing this framework involves the work of the PBL team. This is a representative group comprised of a range of teaching staff, non-teaching staff, school leaders and specialist personnel.

If you are interested in knowing more about our PBL, please contact the school.

Gala Sports – Fridays

Our interschool sports competition is happening again this year. Students from years 5 and 6 will be involved in Soccer and Netball.

As a new initiative, students who are not involved in the sports competition will have the opportunity to participate in extra curricular activities of their choice in the middle session on Friday. Activities such as STEM, rockband, Japanese, visual arts just to name a few. This is line with our vision of ‘providing individual pathways to success’ for all students. I know that our students will enjoy these extension activities. #learningadventures#edenslanding

Parking @ Edens

Please remember that the staff car park and the administration carpark are not for community use at any time. This also includes parents dropping off and picking up from our OHSC program. This is to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Thankyou for respecting this safety rule.

Warmly

YEAR 6 2018

Our Year 6 students are heading off to Camp next week to have an amazing experience and build memories which will last them a lifetime. Mr Tuckett will be going to camp with our Year 6 cohort this year along with two of the Year 6 teachers. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Year 6 teachers and the other staff members who volunteer their time to make this camp a great success.

YEAR 5 Camp 2018

Our Year 5 camp will take place next term. This is a valuable opportunity for students to experience a short stay away from home, and to build strong leadership skills. Camp is designed for encouraging personal growth and building resilience in all students. The camp also covers a large part of the Year 5 curriculum, so we encourage all year 5 students to attend.

Student Council Fundraiser

2018 has seen the election of a very keen group of Student Council representatives. They are organised and hoping to raise significant funds to help with school projects and community support projects. The first fundraiser for the year is an Easter Raffle. Staff members have very generously donated chocolates and Easter Eggs to kick start the prizes. If you would like to donate Easter items towards this fundraising, please drop your chocolates at the office. The more donations we get the more prizes we can offer.

A note went home this week about the sale of Tickets. Raffle tickets cost $1 per ticket, 6 tickets for $5 and 15 tickets for $10. You can purchase tickets from Ms. Alterator and Student Council Members, outside the tuck-shop at 8:30am on Wednesday and Friday mornings or in the Old Hall at second breaks for the next few weeks. Tickets will also be available at our Cross Country Event, on the 30th of March.

The raffle will be drawn on the afternoon of the 28th March. Winners will be notified and prizes will be ready for collection on the last 2 days of term.

Our student council are also running a raffle for a wheel barrow full of gardening items. These tickets will be for sale at parade each week for the next few weeks, at Parent teacher interviews in week 9, cross country week 10 and family fun day.

Please support our student council as they raise money towards a set of team shirts for our Kokoda Challenge teams. These shirts will showcase our school during training and the challenge

Religious Instruction

Queensland state schools embrace a multitude of cultural, religious and non-religious beliefs and encourage students to grow and develop as a whole person, in particular, in beliefs, values and attitudes. State schools respect the background and beliefs of all students and staff by not promoting, or being perceived as promoting, any particular set of beliefs in preference to another. Under the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006, schools are to provide RI each week if approached by a faith group seeking to provide RI and students of that faith attend the school. RI informs students about the beliefs and values of a particular religion. It is delivered by volunteers of a faith group using instructional materials approved by that faith group.

Over the coming weeks we will be commencing Religious Instructions for students in Years 1 and 2 through the Christian Cooperative Program “Godspace”. The churches in the coop are: Australian Christian Churches, Anglican, Baptist, Lutheran, Salvation Army, International Network of churches, Roman Catholic, Apostolic Churches of Australia, Uniting Church.

Students will be automatically placed into this program if this faith group has been nominated on the student’s enrolment form, or if the school has written parental instructions for their child to attend this religious instruction program.

If the school does not already have clear instructions on this and you wish your child to attend this religious instruction program, please provide written advice to the school.

Tips for parents to help your child in Early Childhood

A few weeks ago I was able to increase my personal understanding of how children learn to read through Professional Development offered by the Reading Centre. One of my personal insights was around how we must train our children in ‘Memory Skills’ before we expect them to remember sight words or times tables.

  • Working memory refers to how we hold on to and work with information stored in short-term memory.
  • Kids use working memory to learn and follow directions.
  • Working-memory boosters can be built into your child’s daily life.

Suggested games and ideas.

insert memory.png

Memory

Time: 10 - 15 minutes
Materials: cutlery, china, condiments
Activity: When cleaning off the kitchen table after a meal, remove a few items at a time. Immediately after removing these items have your child recall the objects removed.
Suggested Script: I'm going to clear off the kitchen table. Close your eyes while I take some things off. Open your eyes and tell me what I took off."
Other Activities: Use the same technique when setting the table. Have your child close his/her eyes when you put something on the table and when they open their eyes, they can tell you what you what was added.

Of course there is always the old fashioned card game – there are some free printables at:

Curriculum News

From the Head of Curriculum - Casey Moore

Teaching children to read is a complex process….it is rocket science! Reading builds from foundational skills such as Phonological Awareness and Concepts of Print, to more complex skills such as decoding words and learning sight words. Once these mid-level skills are mastered, students can then move on to learning how to comprehend written and spoken texts. If you have a child in prep and year 1, practicing some simple phonological awareness skills at home can play a huge role in preparing children for future reading success. Here are some things parents can do at home to practice phonological awareness skills:

  • Make up silly sentences with words that begin with the same sound, such as "Nobody was nice to Nancy's neighbor"
  • Read books with rhymes and play simple rhyming or blending games with your child, such as taking turns coming up with words that rhyme (go – no)
  • Play rhyming “I Spy.” You say “I spy with my little eye something that rhymes with … [grable].” The student looks around and sees a “table.” It’s great to do this to pass the time in a new place, like a restaurant, a waiting room, etc.
  • Count syllables in words. As you’re unloading groceries clap the syllables in the items. “How many times did we clap?” Some new exotic additions to the grocery list may spice this up a little (“arugula!”). You could vary this by listing just things you like or dislike, or choosing a category of thing (animals, cars) your student is interested in.
  • Using compound words, ask what’s left when you take away a word. This is the kind of thing that might work on a car ride. “If you start out with a [starfish, football] and you take away the [star, foot], what’s left?” Work on first and last parts of the words.
  • Start with first sounds in words and do something similar to the syllable deletion activity. “What word is left if I start with [pie] but take away the [/p/ sound]?” Words like pie, take, chart, cape, etc., all have hidden words in them.
  • Try a Simon Says game. Warm up with “Simon says touch your [wrist, etc.] Then play it with the words broken into their sound parts: “Simon says touch your /l/-/e/-/g/. Touch your /l/-/i/-/p/-/s/.” Use one-syllable body-part names like toe, heel, foot, knee, thigh, chest, back, ear, etc

If you would like more information about phonolgical awareness please speak with your child’s teacher. The following website below is also a great place for information.

P&C News

The P&C committee would like to thank Bob who has been a hard working volunteer in the Tuckshop for the last 6 years, Bob will be retiring at the end of this week, on behalf of everyone from Edens Landing State School we wish Bob all the very best in his retirement.

Get involved in the School Banking program.

Edens Landing State School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.

School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.

The rewards available during 2018 are:

  • Twister Power Handball
  • Secret Scratch Pad
  • Sparkle Glitter Pens
  • Glow Light
  • Mighty Boom Handball
  • Heat Reactor Pencils
  • Slushie Maker Cup
  • Zoom Flying Disc

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.

Getting involved in School Banking is easy!

All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:

1- Online
Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.

2- In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.

School Banking day is WEDNESDAY. Each week you need to hand in your bank book to your teacher where it will be brought down to the banking ladies.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2018 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking.
