Principal’s Report

Good afternoon Edens Landing community

Week 4 already …how quickly is this term going? Before we know it, it will be Christmas time.

Student Safety

I start this fortnight’s newsletter with some important safety information. Please be aware that under no circumstances is any adult allowed to approach another student on the school grounds other than their own child unless they have been given permission from the parent.

Unfortunately there have been a few cases of parents approaching students about matters that are happening in the school. This is causing great distress for these students and their families. If there is an issue and you need it dealt with please address the concern to the class teacher in the first instance. Thankyou for your support on this matter.

Parking Issues

Last week I had a conversation with our Facilities regional contact person regarding the issues around parking both before and after school. The next step is to re-form the working party that was instrumental in getting our second STOP DROP GO to explore options to improve the situation in the bottom carpark.

In the meantime may I reinforce the importance of using the STOP DROP GO as it was intended…to Stop Drop and GO!!!! Not stop and Stay as some are using it for at the moment. This is a huge safety concern for our students and very frustrating for the parents who are doing the right thing.

If parking is a concern may I suggest you come five or ten minutes later and the congestion has gone.

Priority Support Review

Last week we had a team from the School Improvement unit conduct our final phase of the Priority Support review. This involved two external reviewers talking with the leadership and then a random sample of staff and students about teaching, learning and behaviour. I am proud to say that we passed our review with flying colours and are excited about our future journey. Congratulations to the entire staff.

School Opinion Survey

The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted 31 July to 25 August 2017. All families, school staff and a random sample of students will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what this school does well, and how this school can improve.

Access details for the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be sent home with students last week.

Survey queries or requests for translations can be directed to the office on telephone 07 3826 0333 or email office@edenslandingss.eq.edu.au.

Have a wonderful fortnight

Warmly
Gail

‘Kokoda Children’

What a great honour it was to have Mr Doug Henderson present the awards to the students, Staff and parents who participated in the Kokoda Challenge this year. Mr Henderson was very impressed with not only our participants, but with the whole school and how proudly our students sang the National Anthem and school song. He was also very moved by the welcome dance performed by our indigenous students.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in our Kokoda program, and a huge thank you to Mr Hopkinson and Mrs Alterator who invest their weekends to help our students achieve their personal best. Another thank you to the parents who make the event possible by being part of the hikes or supporting their children to persevere and face the challenges the hikes throw at them each week. Mr Henderson commented how admired our teams are every year as they work as a team and understand the importance of finding the fun in the challenges they face and overcome.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Semester 2 2017 parent/teacher interviews will take place on Wednesday 6th September 2017, from 3:20pm-6:30pm. The 10 minute interviews will run in the same format as last year, with all teachers being positioned in the multipurpose hall for ease of access by parents. Your child’s interim report will be handed to you at this interview.

“Every Child is an Artist” Expo 2017

Please save the date for our Annual Arts Expo which will be held on Wednesday 13th September (week 10). This is always an amazing evening of fun and great entertainment. Once again every student will create a piece of artwork for display. Please watch for more information which will come home closer to the date.

Rule of the Week

The rules for weeks 3 and 4 are outlined below. Teachers will be discussing these with their students over the next two weeks, and it would be wonderful if parents spoke with their children about the importance of each rule.

Week 5 – Be Respectful - Active Listening- wait turns to speak

Teachers explicitly teach students what it means to be an active listener. We talk about whole Body Listening as a way to describe what active listening is.

  1. You listen with your shoulders and feet by turning towards the person who is talking
  2. You listen with your chest by keeping it up and pointed toward the person who is talking
  3. You listen with your hands by not distracting other people or yourself – keeps hands still
  4. You listen with your ears by hearing what other people are saying
  5. You listen with your brain by thinking about want other people are saying
  6. You listen with your eyes by looking at people’s faces and eyes when they are talking to you
  7. You listen with your mouth by only making comments or asking questions about what the person is talking about- don’t interrupt.

Week 6 – Be Respectful- Be tolerant of others

Tolerance refers to an attitude of openness and respect for the differences that exist among people. Tolerance means respecting and learning from others, valuing differences, bridging cultural gaps, rejecting unfair stereotypes, discovering common ground, and creating new bonds. Tolerance, in many ways, is the opposite of prejudice.

But does tolerance mean that all behaviours have to be accepted? Of course not. Tolerance is about accepting people for who they are — not about accepting bad behaviour. Tolerance also means treating others the way you would like to be treated.

How Can Parents Teach Tolerance?

Parents can teach tolerance in many ways. Talking together about tolerance and respect helps children learn more about the values you want them to have. Giving them opportunities to play and work with others is important as well. This lets children learn firsthand that everyone has something to contribute and to experience differences and similarities.

Things parents can do to help children learn tolerance include:

  • Notice your own attitudes. Parents who want to help their children value diversity can be sensitive to cultural stereotypes they may have learned and make an effort to correct them. Demonstrate an attitude of respect for others.
  • Remember that children are always listening. Be aware of the way you talk about people who are different from yourself. Do not make jokes that perpetuate stereotypes. Although some of these might seem like harmless fun, they can undo attitudes of tolerance and respect.
  • Select books, toys, music, art, and videos carefully. Keep in mind the powerful effect the media and pop culture have on shaping attitudes.
  • Point out and talk about unfair stereotypes that may be portrayed in media.
  • Answer children' questions about differences honestly and respectfully. This teaches that it is acceptable to notice and discuss differences as long as it is done with respect.
  • Acknowledge and respect differences within your own family. Demonstrate acceptance of your children's differing abilities, interests, and styles. Value the uniqueness of each member of your family.
  • Remember that tolerance does not mean tolerating unacceptable behaviour. It means that everyone deserves to be treated with respect — and should treat others with respect as well.
  • Help your children feel good about themselves. Children who feel badly about themselves often treat others badly. Children with strong self-esteem value and respect themselves and are more likely to treat others with respect. Help your child to feel accepted, respected, and valued.
  • Give children opportunities to work and play with others who are different from them.
  • Learn together about holiday and religious celebrations that are not part of your own tradition.
  • Honour your family's traditions and teach them to your children — and to someone outside the family who wants to learn about the diversity you have to offer.

When parents encourage a tolerant attitude in their children, talk about their values, and model the behaviour they would like to see by treating others well, children will follow in their footsteps.

Lunch time activities are back into full swing already. One of the many activities offered to students during second play break is our craft club. This club provides opportunities for students to participate in a wide variety of activities, from bubble blowing, play dough, painting and construction right through to learning how to sew using the schools set of sewing machines. If anyone you know has unwanted craft items at home please send them our way. We are always looking for anything which can be used. The items most needed are fabric, glue, scrap booking resources and items to glue to constructions (feathers, sequins, pompoms etc.) All unwanted craft items can be used and will be greatly appreciated. Please leave any items at the office.

Indigenous Homework Club

Indigenous homework club runs every Monday afternoon 3:00-4:30pm from week 2-9 of each term. This program is run by a group of dedicated teachers and is led by Mrs Harding who is Indigenous herself. This is a great opportunity for our Indigenous students to get support with their learning as well as participate in cultural activities to promote an understanding of their culture. I encourage all Indigenous students to attend as often as possible. Parents who wish to contribute to our homework club are also very welcome.

Enjoy More Time to Prepare

Students arriving to school with time to spare have the luxury of settling in, preparing their class materials and focusing their minds on the lessons to come. They have all the time they need to literally and figuratively wake up. Showing up on time can enhance the often-jarring transitioning between sleepy drives to school to concentrating on the day’s first lessons. Students showing up to class in the middle of a lesson miss out on this natural transition period and may lose even more of the lesson as they scurry to settle into an academic focus.

Never Miss Important Information

Arriving to school after classes have begun can cause students to miss more than just the introduction to a new lesson. Teachers often share important information: reminders of upcoming events, class trips, classroom rules, project due dates and other school-related specifics. Students who show up late may miss out on these details and as a result, be unprepared for some future class event. While a teacher will likely reiterate crucial information throughout the day, latecomers may miss out on courtesy reminders about homework assignments and other projects.

Develop Positive Lifelong Habits

Arriving late to school on a consistent basis can have longer-term academic effects. If showing up late to school becomes a habit, students may develop the notion that tardiness is acceptable behaviour. This belief can negatively impact their future work ethic and high school learning. Alternatively, showing up on time to school every day can help students develop the habit of being punctual with important commitments.

Week 4 Newsletter – Tamra

Developing Responsibility and Independence

As our children get older we are teaching them the skills they need in life to be responsible and independent adults. At school we support them to be responsible for their own belongings, be punctual to class, follow instructions, develop studious work habits and learn appropriate social skills, just to name a few.

One way to help your children develop responsibility, independence and teamwork at home is by giving them chores to do. In my household we try to teach our children that we are a team, and everyone is responsible for the smooth running of the house. It’s not just mum’s job or an adult’s job. We can all help, no matter how old we are.

Here are some age appropriate chores your child may be able to do:

Ages 4-5

Make bed
Put clothes away
Set table
Feed pets
Weed the garden

Ages 6-8

Meal preparation (wash vegetables, find ingredients, simple cutting)
Wipe bathroom sinks and benches
Vacuum
Get mail
Fold laundry

Ages 9-11

Make simple meals
Take garbage/recycling out
Wash dishes
Hang laundry
Mop floors

Many students have told me about the chores they have done recently to earn privileges like buying a NED yo-yo. Learning that we have to work hard to get what we want is a very important skill and one we teach through developing a Growth Mindset here at Edens Landing. I thoroughly enjoy the conversations I have with parents in regards to supporting their children. Working together is vital in helping our children succeed.

Please feel free to contact your classroom teacher or one of the Leadership team if we can help support you and your child.

Deputy Principal’s News

As I walk through the classrooms I am inspired by the innovative work that is happening to engage student learning. The prep children are exploring different 3 D shapes in their environment, and then building some back in their rooms, while the year one classes are creating characters to use in a narrative.

While I have been on gate duty lately, I have been concerned about children who do not cross the roads in a safe manner. Please revise the road safety rules with your child/ children on a regular basis; we will also remind them at school, so together we can keep your child/ children safe.

Reading at Home

Earlier this term we gave books to the students who read at home on a regular basis. Please make sure you sign your child’s reading log in their homework book so that your child can receive a book each term. I would like to thank the P&C for the generous donations of books through the Book Club to make this possible.

As children become more fluent readers, parents can help by having more book discussion rather than just listening to a child read aloud.

Reading is more than saying the words or getting from the beginning of the book to the end. To be successful readers, children need to be able to comprehend text.

Comprehension occurs at four different levels of complexity and each level is dependent upon competence at the previous level.

The literal level is when the reader understands the basic facts. This information is contained explicitly within the text being read. The reader at this level needs to understand word meanings, recognise the main idea, understand about sequence and order and be able to recognise cause and effect when they are mentioned in the text being read.

At the inferential level, the reader needs to go beyond what has been written in the passage and needs to add meaning or draw conclusions. Skills at this level include being able to make generalizations, being able to predict what may happen, working out cause and effect when these are not specifically stated, and discovering relationships between people and things.

The third level is called the critical level. This is where the reader is involved in assessing and working out the (good) sense of what is being read in the passage. The reader at this level may think of new ideas or develop new insights that have not been stated explicitly in the text being read.

The fourth level is the creative level. This is where the reader takes information and the ideas read, and then creates new ideas from them. At this level the reader is stimulated towards new and original thinking.

I will be focussing on each of these levels over the next few newsletters to help parents with extending children’s reading at home.

Character descriptive writing, by Tyler - 5L.

The Silly Scientist,

My favourite character is Dr Carmelius because he is really smart. He also has a weird haircut and a white laboratory coat. Dr Carmelius's hair is so weird that it looks like he just got out of bed. He also makes lots of jokes. My favourite is "Just last week I found a cure for biting insects. How? It's easy, just don't bite any insects."

ART NEWS!

GWEN

LILY

Following an Art Unit where the Year 1's painted in the style of Monet, Gwen and Lily from 1D, painted these wonderful oversized sunflowers. On each painting is the following poem.

A Little Seed

A little seed for me to sow
A little soil to make it grow
A little hole, a little pat,
A little wish, and that is that,
A little sun, a little shower,
A little while - And then, a flower!

These words are a great metaphor for growing up and life!

Have a wonderful week!

Representative News

Congratulations to Anna who placed 18th at the Queensland Schools Cross Country Championship. A wonderful achievement Anna, well done!

Junior Sports Day

This day will be held on Friday 18th August. This day involves students from Prep-2 participating in a range of tabloid activities and running races. Family and friends are encouraged to come along and support their child/ren. Students are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear, house colours, sunscreen, a hat and bring plenty of water. A note with further information will be sent home shortly.

Hats

Our school is very conscious of the need and importance of sun safety and has established a clear expectation that all students wear a school hat as part of the school uniform requirements. This is especially important during Physical Education (PE) lessons as students are participating in activities that require them to be outside and in the sun. In saying this, there are a number of students who are failing to bring a hat to lessons. Please ensure your child has a hat to participate in lessons.

Other Events

Chappy Word

Hi Everyone,

By now I am sure you all know that we have a breakfast program here at the school that runs three days a week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. At breakfast we serve toast, cereal and at times fruit and baked beans. The breakfast program at our school would not be here if it were not for the YMCA Breakfast program.

The website describes the program as:

The YMCA Schools' Breakfast Program is a school based program where food, equipment and guidance are provided free of charge by the YMCA, so that schools are able to operate a breakfast program which in turn improves student academic, school community and behavioural outcomes. The Program is currently supported by the Clem Jones Group, Foodbank Queensland, and Tip Top (George Weston Foods).

The goal of the program is to provide school children with a real opportunity to make the most of their education. We do this by reducing the number of students disadvantaged by hunger and poor nutrition. The program is free of charge to all children within participating schools regardless of their socioeconomic status, culture or religion.

http://www.ycare.org.au/our-programs/schools-breakfast-program.html

The breakfast program in our school is also supported by volunteers who without their help could not run as well. There are many teachers within the school who help to serve breakfast as well as community volunteers who give up time each week. We would like to say thank you to all those who help out breakfast program.

Teresa helps on Tuesdays mornings and Ralph and Anne come in on Thursdays. Thank you from all of us here at Edens Landing State School.

If you know anyone who would like to help at the breakfast program please see the office or myself.

Thank you,

School Chaplain

ORDERING PROCESS

We also have an online ordering system called Flexischools. THIS IS OUR PREFERRED METHOD OF ORDERING. Our flexischools cut off time is 8am the morning of service, please make sure your orders are in and confirmed by 8am or they will not be processed on the flexischool website.

If you make a Flexischools order and for some reason your child does not come to school, call the tuckshop and let us know before 9am so the order can be cancelled and you will be refunded. If you do not let us know then the order will not be cancelled and therefore you will be charged. If no one answers the phone it is because we are busy so just leave a quick and clear message with child’s name and class.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the link below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, FlexiSchools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. If you use this method for your tuckshop orders, please use 2 bags if there is more than 1 item i.e. sandwich and juice needs 2 bags. Use one staple in the top left hand corner of the bag to secure the 2 bags together. Please do not staple or sticky tape the entire top of the bag closed. Just fold the bag/s a few times and either drop off into the quick drop box or take it to class to put in the tuckshop folder in the classroom. If you are concerned about money falling out of the bag, pop the tuckshop bags into a snap lock bag.

Another method of tuckshop ordering is the DIY system. There are bags and a quick drop box set up at the tuckshop counter. If you use this to order your tuckshop please write the order on the bag/s put the money inside the bag, fold the bag a few times and place it into the quick drop box. If change is required, it will be put in the corner of the bag and returned with the tuckshop. Friday mornings there will be 2 DIY areas and another quick drop box.

Any information regarding the tuckshop and volunteer rosters will be here in our fortnightly newsletters and if there is anything that cannot wait for the newsletter I will post on the Edens Landing State School P&C Association Facebook page -
