School Opinion Survey
Have you completed your School Opinion Survey? Thank you for taking the time. If not, please read on. All families will have received communication from the school regarding the annual School Opinion Survey. You will have received along with a blue piece of paper your unique user name and password.
Each year, we undertake a survey of parents, students and staff to gauge their satisfaction with important aspects of schooling. Your response to this survey is confidential. Later in the year, we will receive a report outlining the results of the survey. The results will help us to evaluate and to reflect on how well the school is going, and to identify areas for future development.
For these reasons, I would like to thank you in advance for your completion of the survey as it will help us celebrate what’s great about our school and what we could further improve upon.
If you do not have computer access at home, parents and caregivers are welcome to complete their survey online at the school.
Thank you in advance for your participation.
Upcoming Book Week Parade
I am getting very excited about our Book Week celebrations this coming Friday 25th August from 9am. I have got my costume organised but I have to admit it has been stressful ensuring that it is up to the Edens Landing dress up standard lol. Can’t wait to see the array of costumes and characters. I hope to see you all there.
Japanese Speaking competition
On Sunday August 13, 9 children represented our school in the 2017 Gold Coast Japanese Speech Contest. Representing our school was Kailie (Year 4), Satsuki, Sapphire, Roxy, Trinity (Year 5), Tahlia, Paresa, Fatema and Irma (Year 6). Everyone did a fantastic job and we received 5 Highly Commendeds (Satsuki, Sapphire, Trinity, Tahlia and Paresa), one 5th place medal (Roxy) and Kailie achieved 1st (gold medal) in her category. Thank you to all of our students for giving up some of their play times during the last month to practise. Thank you also to all of the families for your support and to Mrs Mohr and Mrs Bando for your help during practice times. A huge thankyou also to Mrs Kure for her dedication to our LOTE program.
Warmly

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Bookings for interviews is now open and will close on the 1st of September. Spaces fill up quickly so please book early if you require specific times. Semester 2 2017 parent/teacher interviews will take place on Wednesday 6th September 2017, from 3:20pm-6:30pm. The 10 minute interviews will run in the same format as last year, with all teachers being positioned in the multipurpose hall for ease of access by parents.
Parent-teacher interviews are a great way to find out how your child is going and show your interest in your child’s learning and school life.
Why it’s worth going to parent-teacher interviews?
Parent-teacher interviews give you a great opportunity to:
- learn more about your child’s academic, emotional and social development
- meet and get to know your child’s teachers
- help your child’s teachers understand more about your child
- make plans with the teacher about how you can both support your child
- build a relationship with your child’s school.
It’s useful to have a few questions in mind too. For example:
- What are my child’s strengths?
- What does my child struggle with?
- How much homework should my child be doing every night?
- What can I do at home to help with my child with schoolwork?
- What can you tell me about my child’s behaviour in class?
- How is my child getting along with other students?

NEW REWARDS SYSTEM
After much consultation with staff, students and parents, we are ready to launch our new rewards system to replace the current bronze, silver, gold & diamond system.
The new system is based on a series of ‘collector card’ style “GOTCHAS” which students can collect to build a whole set. Once a whole set has been collected students will get their photo displayed on the ‘Wall of Fame’ in the foyer of the office block. Additionally, students will work towards individual goals to gain access to a variety of exciting experiences of their choice which will replace the current Gold & Diamond Days. Attendance is not a component of this system, however, the more students are at school the more opportunities they will have to receive a GOTCHA. The new system will be launched with students next week.
LOST PROPERTY
It is hard to believe that we are already heading for week 7 of term 3, what a busy term we have had. Students are enjoying the warm weather and jumpers are piling up in the lost property as a result. We now have a huge stockpile of lost property. Please check that your child has their name clearly marked on all items of clothing and if you have noticed a missing jumper (or any other piece of clothing), please check the lost property shelf which is positioned on the stage in the old hall. ALL REMAINING LOST PROPERTY WILL BE DISPOSED OF AT THE END OF EACH TERM.
Rule of the Week
The rules for weeks 7 and 8 are outlined below. Teachers will be discussing these with their students over the next two weeks, and it would be wonderful if parents spoke with their children about the importance of each rule.
Week 7 – Respect the rights of others
Treating people with respect makes your world a nicer place to live in, whether it's at home, at school, or out in your community. And it's easy - all you have to do is treat people the way you like to have them treat you. Here are a few ideas that parents can use to help their children respect the rights of others:
- Don't insult people or make fun of them.
- Listen to others when they speak.
- Value other people's opinions. (This does not mean you have to agree with everything they say)
- Be considerate of people's likes and dislikes.
- Don't mock or tease people.
- Don't talk about people behind their backs.
- Be sensitive to other people's feelings.
- Don't pressure someone to do something he or she doesn't want to do.
We live in a diverse nation made up of many different cultures, languages, races, and backgrounds, and our school is no different. That kind of variety can make all our lives a lot more fun and interesting, but only if we get along with each other. And to do that we have to respect each other. In addition to the list above, here are some ways we can respect people who are different from us.
- Try to learn something from the other person.
- Never stereotype people.
- Show interest and appreciation for other people's cultures and backgrounds.
- Don't go along with prejudices and racist attitudes.
Week 8 – Be Responsible- Be honest - Points to discuss with your child
What does honesty mean?
- To be truthful
- To not lie, cheat, or steal.
Why is honesty important?
- Honest people are trustworthy, dependable, and respected by others.
- It is the right thing to do. It feels good.
- Telling the truth lets everyone know what happened and keeps the wrong person from being blamed for something they didn’t do.
What are the consequences of dishonesty?
- Losing the trust and respect of others.
- The need to tell more lies in order to cover up.
- You may face consequences and embarrassment.
What are the qualities of an honest person?
- Tells the truth, regardless of the consequence.
- Admits when he or she is wrong.
- Does not cheat or steal.
- Does not exaggerate to make things seem different than they are.
- Keeps promises and encourages others to be truthful.

Reading at home
A. Visualising
Readers create pictures in their minds as they read. If they aren’t able to, comprehension is lost. Perhaps background knowledge isn’t solid enough for the child to understand the text or perhaps he or she needs to reread for understanding. You could have your children make stops while reading aloud to describe the pictures in their minds. They could even draw for you what they see. You could ask questions…
- What do you picture as you read this paragraph?
- When reading this story did you make pictures in your head?
- How did these pictures help you understand the story better?
B. Questioning
When readers question the text before, during, and after they read, they attend more closely to the text, clarify meaning, make predictions, and focus their attention on what’s important. It is critical for readers to understand some of the most interesting questions we have aren’t always answered in the story.
Before Reading
What do you think will happen?
Why do you suppose…
During Reading
What do you think?
What do you wonder?
How come…
What does this word mean? How can I figure out using clues from the
text?
After Reading
What would have happened if…
I wonder why the author…
I wonder where we could look to find out more about…

ORDERING PROCESS
We also have an online ordering system called Flexischools. THIS IS OUR PREFERRED METHOD OF ORDERING. Our flexischools cut off time is 8am the morning of service, please make sure your orders are in and confirmed by 8am or they will not be processed on the flexischool website.
If you make a Flexischools order and for some reason your child does not come to school, call the tuckshop and let us know before 9am so the order can be cancelled and you will be refunded. If you do not let us know then the order will not be cancelled and therefore you will be charged. If no one answers the phone it is because we are busy so just leave a quick and clear message with child’s name and class.
Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the link below and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, FlexiSchools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.
http://www.flexischools.com.au/
At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. If you use this method for your tuckshop orders, please use 2 bags if there is more than 1 item i.e. sandwich and juice needs 2 bags. Use one staple in the top left hand corner of the bag to secure the 2 bags together. Please do not staple or sticky tape the entire top of the bag closed. Just fold the bag/s a few times and either drop off into the quick drop box or take it to class to put in the tuckshop folder in the classroom. If you are concerned about money falling out of the bag, pop the tuckshop bags into a snap lock bag.
Another method of tuckshop ordering is the DIY system. There are bags and a quick drop box set up at the tuckshop counter. If you use this to order your tuckshop please write the order on the bag/s put the money inside the bag, fold the bag a few times and place it into the quick drop box. If change is required, it will be put in the corner of the bag and returned with the tuckshop. Friday mornings there will be 2 DIY areas and another quick drop box.
Any information regarding the tuckshop and volunteer rosters will be here in our fortnightly newsletters and if there is anything that cannot wait for the newsletter I will post on the Edens Landing State School P&C Association Facebook page -
