Principal’s Report

Good afternoon Edens Landing community

It is hard to believe that I have been here at Edens Landing for almost three weeks … it seems like three years that is how comfortable I feel.

To ensure I have a better understanding of our school and the community I have been spending my time in classrooms, talking with staff, talking with students and talking with parents and the wider community. I have also been involved in programs that are happening before and after school. The conclusion I have drawn is that this is one FANTASTIC school where staff are going above and beyond to ensure that our students are being offered the most amazing experiences to ensure they are engaged, learning and supported socially and emotionally.

Some of the amazing things I have witnessed are :

Choir. I was treated to a beautiful and moving choral performance of one of my favourite songs, Cyndi Lauper …Like a Rainbow. Nothing is better than the sound of childrens’ voices. Then the tempo was uplifted to Dynamite …kids hopping and bopping lol. Thankyou Mr Kazoullis for giving his time before school to allow this program to happen.

Breakfast Club

This operates every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Teachers willingly are up there cooking toast, providing fruit etc. to make sure the students have a good start to their day. This program is supported by the YMCA and we are very grateful for their donations. A big thankyou to all staff who assist, particularly Mr Tuckett.

Indigenous Homework Club

Wonderful staff, support students to get assistance with their homework as well as support with any of their learning every Monday afternoon. Students are also learning the Yugambeh greeting dance to perform on assembly as part of NAIDOC week. It is wonderful to see these students celebrating their culture and heritage. Thankyou to Mrs Faye Harding, who identifies as indigenous herself, and her band of wonderful helpers.

These are just an example of the programs that are on offer at Edens Landing. Next week I will detail some more.

Bush Dance

I am getting so excited for our 20 Anniversary celebration – the Bush Dance – coming up in a couple of weeks. For me, it is extra special, being a foundation staff member all those years ago, to now be the Principal to celebrate this wonderful milestone. It is going to be a great night so I hope to see you all there in your best country and western outfits.

Kids Matters

This week, a team of staff, including a parent representative met to discuss how we can ensure that all students and community members are supported socially and emotionally. The main focus was discussing ways in which our school can be more open and embrace the whole community and ensuring that parents feel comfortable to come and be a part of our school. If you have any thoughts, I would love to hear from you. gquig1@eq.edu.au.

I look forward to meeting with you over the next couple of weeks as I continue to explore the school and the community who is part of it. Hope to see you at the Bush Dance.

Warmly
Gail

Over the past few weeks we have been making connections with the Logan Libraries to investigate how we can work together to improve reading for all our students at Edens Landing State School. Megan from the Beenleigh library came to our Under 8’s day with some very entertaining books and puppets; staffs from our school have visited the library to investigate the robotics and elibrary activities.

There are so many activities available to all our families throughout the year and especially in the holiday periods. This week we will be sending home information and membership packs to every family so everyone can have access to the resources at the library – including the online books and activities.

You do not need to go to the library to join; just hand the completed form back to the school office.

Family Night In at the Beenleigh Library –

Crete Street, Beenleigh

Friday 30 June

6.00 – 7.30pm (while the library is closed, meaning exclusive fun and activities for Edens Landing families who are members of the library)

  • A craft activity
  • Afterhours access to computers
  • Storytelling session

OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL HOURS CARE (OSHC) is coming to Edens Landing State School. _ Spaces are limited

Spaces are filling up quickly so if you want to enrol your child (Before and after school and holiday care), please return your registration forms. If you haven’t completed a form please collect your enrolment pack from the school office. This service will start for the June/July holidays. Please support this service as YMCA will be an amazing asset to our school community and the Edens Landing Family. PLEASE RETURN YOUR COMPLETED FORMS TO THE OFFICE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

BUSH DANCE

23rd June is the date for our 20th Anniversary celebration Bush Dance. Every class will be performing a dance, we have a bush band coming to perform and there will be entertainment, food and activities for the whole family. We have decided to make the cost of entry a gold coin donation to ensure we get as many families as possible to attend.

There will be a photographer to take family photos to capture the event, so get dressed in your best bush gear and get your photo taken. You never know, you could be featured at our 30 year celebration 10 years from now.

Year 5 are running a lucky jar stall. Any donations suitable to fill jars can be left at the office and will be gratefully received.

Student Council

The student Council will be running a Lob-A-Choc stall at the Bush Dance. They urgently require donations of NUT FREE chocolates for their stall. Family blocks, kit-kats, medium sized blocks, anything flat enough for a coin to land on would be great. Donations can be left at my office. All proceeds will go towards supporting our Kitchen Garden Project.

Lost Property

We have a growing number of lost items in out lost property bin including uniforms, jumpers, drink bottles and lunch boxes. The school captains place these items out each morning so students can retrieve anything they have lost. If you know that your child is missing an item, please take the time to go through the lost property bin (located in the old hall) as any remaining items will be disposed of in the next two weeks.

Rule of the Week

The rules for weeks 9 and 10 are outlined below. Teachers will be discussing these with their students over the next two weeks, and it would be wonderful if parents spoke with their children about the importance of each rule.

Week 9 - Be Respectful and Safe – Move around the school in an orderly manner (including lining up).

As with all activities carried out throughout a school day, moving around the school requires students, staff and visitors to follow school expectations. By following our school expectations, we ensure that everyone keeps themselves and those around them safe from injury or harm, and that students in class are able to learn without noisy distractions from people outside of their classrooms.

Students, staff and visitors are expected to use the walkways provided (rather than taking short-cuts across our gardens/grass), walk quietly and to the left of the path. Students, staff or visitors moving around the school during our National Anthem, are asked to stand still and quiet until the National Anthem finishes, before moving on.

Week 8 - Be Respectful- Ask permission (use manners)

What are good manners? Courtesy, politeness or having good manners are all about respecting others and yourself.

Good manners is about considering the feelings of other people, and being the kind of person that others will like and respect.

If children show good manners everywhere they go, they are more likely to encourage others to behave in the same way towards them.

The following ideas come from children who were asked to give examples of good manners:

What do good manners look like at home?

  • Being helpful to others in your home.
  • Saying 'please' and 'thank you'.
  • Sharing and not grabbing and keeping good things to yourself.
  • Respecting other people's property and their rooms.
  • Helping the family by doing your chores.
  • Cleaning up after yourself.

Manners at school means:

  • Saying good morning/afternoon if you are walking past an adult who you know.
  • Asking if you can borrow something, not just taking.
  • Returning things you have borrowed.
  • Waiting your turn before you speak.
  • Saying 'excuse me,' rather than pushing past someone.
  • Holding the door open for the person coming in, especially if they are carrying something.
  • Respecting your own and other people's property, including school property.
  • Saying 'please' and 'thank you'

Deputy Principal’s News

For our children to be able to deal with problems we need to teach them many skills. Some of the most important skills to success and happiness are:

  • Persistence – even if a task is hard or they don’t like it, give it their best effort
  • Organisation – be prepared and take care of their belongings
  • Confidence – have a positive mindset, ‘I can do it!’
  • Getting along – be respectful and considerate of others
  • Resilience – if they’ve got a problem, problem solve and know it’s going to be ok

I love to ask my children different questions every day after school, often while we are eating dinner. It’s a great opportunity not only to hear about their day but to teach some of the skills they need to be successful and happy. Just asking “How was your day?” often ends up with “fine” or “What did you do today?” is a simple “nothing”. Here are 10 different questions you may like to try:

  1. What made you smile today?
  2. Can you tell me an example of kindness you saw/showed?
  3. Was there an example of unkindness? How did you respond?
  4. Does everyone have a friend at play time?
  5. What was the book about that your teacher read?
  6. Did anyone do anything silly to make you laugh?
  7. Did anyone cry?
  8. What did you do that was creative?
  9. What was the best thing that happened today?
  10. Did you help anyone today?

Discussing how we deal with problems is important but one of the most important skills is how they look at life. Teaching our children that they are responsible for helping to make others feel good and that they are capable of solving their own problems ensuring they know we are here to guide them along the way.

CLOSED

CLOSED

Tuckshop will be closed for cleaning the last day of term, Friday 23 June. Stock will be run down in the lead up to holidays and all efforts will be made to make sure your childs order is filled. If there is something unavailable Flexischools will be updated and a post on our Edens Landing State School P&C Association Facebook page, so keep an eye on our page for any updates.

ORDERING PROCESS

Our tuckshop has an online ordering system called Flexischools. This is our preferred method of ordering. Our flexischools cut off time is 8am the morning of service, please make sure your orders are in and confirmed by 8am or they will not be processed on the flexischool website.

If you make a Flexischools order and for some reason your child does not come to school, call the tuckshop and let us know before 9am so the order can be cancelled and you will be refunded. If you do not let us know then the order will not be cancelled and therefore you will be charged. If no one answers the phone it is because we are busy so just leave a quick and clear message with child’s name and class.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the FlexiSchools website and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, FlexiSchools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au/

At the bottom of the menu there is information on how to order tuckshop using the paper bag system. If you use this method for your tuckshop orders, please use 2 bags if there is more than 1 item i.e. sandwich and juice needs 2 bags. Use one staple in the top left-hand corner of the bag to secure the 2 bags together. Please do not staple or sticky tape the entire top of the bag closed. Just fold the bag/s a few times and either drop off into the quick drop box or take it to class to put in the tuckshop folder in the classroom. If you are concerned about money falling out of the bag, pop the tuckshop bags into a snap lock bag.

Another method of tuckshop ordering is the DIY system. There are bags and a quick drop box set up at the tuckshop counter. If you use this to order your tuckshop please write the order on the bag/s put the money inside the bag, fold the bag a few times and place it into the quick drop box. If change is required, it will be put in the corner of the bag and returned with the tuckshop. If there is a large amount of change I will keep in the tuckshop for pick up later in the day. Friday mornings there will be 2 DIY areas. Please make use of these areas to avoid waiting in long queues.

Any information regarding the tuckshop and volunteer rosters will be here in our fortnightly newsletters and if there is anything that cannot wait for the newsletter I will post on the Edens Landing State School P&C Association Facebook page
