SCHOOL STARTS AT 8:50 AM AND CONCLUDES AT 2:50PM

Principal’s Report

Did you know?

From 2017, it is compulsory for Queensland children to undertake Prep prior to Year 1. Prep is a full-time program in primary schools. Children attend Monday-Friday, generally from 9am-3pm. Children must be 5 by 30 June in the year they enrol.

https://www.qld.gov.au/education/earlychildhood/prep/pages/enrolments.html

Get in quick and make sure your child has a position at Edens Landing State School spots are filling fast! You must have a birth certificate for proof of age and satisfy the required documentation to prove you live in the catchment area. Class placement for 2017 is provisional and will not be confirmed until approximately Week 4 of the first term.

All students attending Prep in 2017 MUST have an interview with the Prep teachers. Please phone the school urgently to arrange a suitable time. Students who do not have a prep experience meeting and pre entry interview WILL NOT commence Prep in 2017 until this process has been carried out. It is vital that this happens this year in conjunction with satisfying the mandated enrolment requirements.

Out of Hours School Care (OHSC)

We have recently satisfied the requirements to seek an onsite service to allow parents the opportunity to engage with afterhours care and vacation care. It’s an exciting opportunity for a service to allow some dual opportunities for parents and the school.

I’m expecting the service will run from the new hall on most occasions. The review evaluation panel to consider the applications will be made up of Cheryl Gibson (Panel Chairperson), Rachel Odgers (Business Services Manager) and Kirstin Hanson (P and C President). It will then be my role to approve the onsite facility and the Department will then assess and give final approval for the service to operate.

Daily Text Messaging – Unexplained Absence

We are currently implementing a daily text messaging system to notify parents of absences. This is a new requirement for all state schools. If you get a text please respond to ensure that the absence is explained for your child. Failure to explain absences will have a negative impact on rewards days. It is essential all absences are explained.

Where a student is absent for an extended period of time, an application MUST be made to the Principal for an exemption from compulsory schooling. Failure to apply for exemption may result in proceedings against parents under the Education Act in relation to your obligations for compulsory schooling. This may also result in children being ineligible for rewards days as per the school policy.

Daily Text Messaging – Unexplained Late Arrival

Any child arriving late to school needs to report to the office with their parent(s) and be signed in or they will be marked absent and you will receive an automated text message. At times we expect there may be some issues as we manage some of the complexities with regard to excursions and other school events or events that may qualify for exemption.

I would ask that you ensure your arrival at school BEFORE the commencement of school at 8:50am as late arrivals interrupt all learners.

2017 Enrolment Numbers

We are currently staffing for 2017. It is vital that you let the school know if you are not intending to return in 2017. Changes to student numbers can have significant implications for class structures and staffing. Please communicate with the office immediately if you are not returning in the 2017 school year or even if you may not be returning at this point. I thank you sincerely for your assistance!

Deputy Principal’s News

Graduation for Year 6 Students 2016

At the end of this term our Year 6 students will graduate from Edens Landing State School. Notes will be going home soon informing parents of the arrangements for graduation on the 6th December. Each year we have parents ask to bring younger siblings to the ceremony, and unfortunately, each year we have to say no. The venue has limited seating, there simply isn’t enough space to accommodate everyone’s younger siblings. Limited extra tickets are available for families who have two households and want tickets for step parents. The seating is restricted with very little additional seating available. Each student is allocated two seats within their graduation pack. Families who require additional seats for step parents are encouraged to purchase these early, as additional seats are allocated on a first-in-first-served basis. Once the additional seating is sold, there will be strictly two seats per student only.

Year Five Senior Shirts

This year, Year 5 students will have the opportunity to purchase a seniors’ shirt, so they are ready for them to wear from day one of Year 6, 2017.

Sizes of the shirts are similar to the current (new stock) uniform sizes. If your child is wearing a uniform from a previous batch, the sizes may vary. A sample of each size is available for fitting purposes from the office. The cost for each shirt is $36. Please allow a little extra room for growth throughout next year as we cannot exchange sizes once ordered from the supplier. This is the only opportunity to purchase a senior shirt for 2017.

If you are unsure of the correct size, send the payment and order form to the office and your child can try on the shirts and select the appropriate size on the order form. There will be no extension to the payment deadline, so ensure all payments and forms are returned to the office by Monday 7th November 2016.

Rule of the Week

The rules for weeks 5 and 6 of Term 4 are outlined below. Teachers will be discussing these with their students over the next two weeks, and it would be wonderful if parents spoke with their children about the importance of each rule.

Week 5: Show RESPECT – Be on Time

Showing other people respect is a critical part of maintaining important personal relationships. Being on time is one way we show respect.

As a school community, we place great importance on students being punctual to school and to lessons. Lack of punctuality affects learning and behaviour not only of the student who is late, but of other learners in the class due to the disruption caused as student enter after the lesson has started and as the teacher is required to recap on missed learning for those who arrive late. This reduces learning time for all students of the class.

At Edens Landing State School, our expectation is that students are at school waiting in the designated places no later than 8.40am, so they are ready to enter class and begin learning at 8:50am. Similarly, students are expected to return to class promptly after each break.

Every minute of learning is important. Please support us in ensuring your child arrives on time, in correct uniform and with all the equipment they require, ready to work hard every day.

Week 6: Be SAFE – Ask Permission to Leave the Room

Students are expected to remain in class at all times, unless given specific permission from their teacher to leave. Like every school, Edens Landing State School has expectations around students leaving the classroom during learning time, to use the bathroom, get a drink or attend to other matters as they arise. Students are expected to follow these policies, and understand that at times it may be appropriate for the teacher to respond by saying “no” or “please wait a minute.”

It is expected that all students use the toilets and get drinks at the appropriate times: before school and during first and second break. If a student does require to use the facilities during class time, they should:

1. Raise their hand, wait patiently to be called on, and ask for permission to leave the room. “May I please go to the toilet, Mr./Mrs/Ms. ____.”
2. Choose an appropriate time to ask. Before asking, students should make sure it is a convenient time to ask. They should ask themselves, “Is it a good time to talk to my teacher and leave the classroom?”

- Students should avoid asking to leave the room when the teacher is in the middle of giving instructions or explanation.
- Where possible, students should ask during independent work times, when they have finished all class work, or between activities.
- Of course, if it is an emergency, students should remain calm and ask the teacher immediately, letting the teacher know that it is urgent.

3. Leave and enter the classroom without disturbing others.
4. Act responsibly if given permission to leave the room, returning promptly.

Regards

Mrs Cheryl Gibson

Deputy Principal’s News

What a wonderful 4 weeks I have had so far at Edens Landing, developing productive relationships with the staff and getting to know the students. I am already feeling apart of the ‘family’.

I began teaching in 1999 at Currumbin Primary SS then transferred to Bellevue Park SS in 2013. I have taught across all year levels, with experience most recently leading the Special Education Program and Learning Support. I have always been very passionate about catering for students as individuals and developing partnerships with their families to support them. I have very high expectations in regards to quality teaching and student behaviour. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing students successful and thriving both academically and socially. As a Deputy Principal I look at all situations from an educator’s perspective and as a mother. I have 2 children of my own. My daughter Kaitlin is 12 and off to high school next year and my son Zayne is 10.

Professional Development Framework

I have met with interested teachers to begin the collaborative process of creating a Professional Learning Framework, which will outline how we support our staff in their development as professionals. Just like our students, our staff are always learning and striving to achieve the best results. Therefore, it is essential to provide numerous opportunities for staff to develop their skills in the ever changing world we live in, staying up to date with current research and the skills needed to cater to our diverse learners to achieve high results.

Kids Matter

As a Kids Matter school it is of a high priority for our students to learn skills that are essential for their social and emotional development. These skills are the foundation for our students to be successful in their academic studies and for their mental health. We have excellent programs already in place here at Edens Landing including PBL and growth mindset but we are working towards ensuring all key areas are taught explicitly.

The following key areas form the framework to support our social emotional learning:

  • Social development
  • Emotional development
  • Motivation and praise
  • Managing behaviour
  • Positive separations
  • Resilience
  • Making decisions
  • Resolving conflict
  • Anger

What a fantastic fortnight it’s been. We have celebrated the Diamond day for great behaviour with a disco where I was able to do the ‘duck dance’, and I have been able to observe some reading lessons and listen to children read, demonstrating their progress this year.

In our family we all love books and celebrate reading. I would love to share some of my personal favourite moments with books. Please share your moments with us so we can celebrate reading at Edens Landing State School. Email your pictures to office@edenslandingss.eq.edu.au and I will include your pictures in our newsletter.

Next week on assembly we will be celebrating the Premiers Reading Challenge with a special guest because our school had 100% participation in the Reading challenge. I’m looking forward to celebrating this fabulous achievement.

Curriculum News

Our core business at Edens Landing State School is teaching our students to become confident and critical readers. Reading is a life skill that we value with the upmost importance.

All staff have been working extremely hard in ensuring that consistent reading programs are delivered across the school. Staff have been working with a reading coach in upskilling their knowledge and practices. Students are exposed to reading across the curriculum through guided, shared and modelled reading experiences on a daily basis.

Reading does not just stop at school. Students are exposed to reading opportunities throughout their whole day. Families can contribute to helping their children develop their reading skills and share in an enjoyment of reading through some very easy tasks, such as:

  • Develop reading skills in different places. At the shops, using the junk mail, reading the TV guide or reading the menu at restaurants. Many of these times are great relaxed spaces that will enhance their skills to read for meaning. Showing them the real life value of understanding texts in our world can make it so much easier back in the classroom when they encounter different types of texts.
  • Read a bedtime story every night. It is really important for students to see adults around them reading and sharing their favourite stories.
  • Share in the reading experience with your child. They read one page and you read the next.
  • Choose stories that make you laugh together.

As Dr Suess once said:

Year 6

Science

Students are looking at what affect sugar and sunlight have on plant growth. For the past few weeks we have been growing our bean seeds ready to begin our experiment.

English

We have been reading and viewing a variety of biographies in preparation to writing our own written piece on an inspirational individual. The focus of our biographies is to write about a person who inspires and demonstrates courage through their life.

Year 2

Year 2 have enjoyed their first kitchen visits with Chef Chris over the last couple of weeks, making Lemonade scones and Vegetable Filo. Students were taught key kitchen skills of following a recipe, measuring ingredients and how to safely use a knife. We also visited the garden and explored the wide variety of fruits and vegetables that are grown as part of the Kitchen Garden program.

Another highlight has been students developing Drama skills through Readers Theatre activities. We have been practicing using tone, eye contact, gestures and movement to enhance our Drama presentations. We are working towards presenting short plays as part of our assessment for The Arts.

In Geography we are now exploring global divisions, looking at the Worlds 7 continents and 5 oceans. We are starting to focus on exploring the worlds many countries and all the exciting places there are to visit, from the Statue of Liberty in New York to Big Ben in London!

Year 3

This term Year 3 is busily exploring poetry and learning about rhythm, alliteration and onomatopoeia and writing their own anthology of poetry. They are enjoying performing a selection of humorous poems written by Kenn Nesbitt for Drama.

Have a wonderful week,

Mrs Rachel Pope

Physical Education

Swimming Program

The grade 1-2 swimming program will commence on the 21st November. All medical forms and payment must be returned by the 14th November.

Hats

Our school is very conscious of the need and importance of sun safety and has established a clear expectation that all students wear a school hat as part of the school uniform requirements. This is especially important during Physical Education (PE) lessons as students are participating in activities that require them to be outside and in the sun. In saying this, there are a number of students who are failing to bring a hat to lessons. Please ensure your child has a hat to participate in lessons.

Sport Shirts

School sport shirts have arrived and can be purchased from the uniform shop. This shirt can be worn any day of the week except for school photo days and excursions. The cost of the shirt is $33. A limited supply has been ordered.

Interschool Sport

Over the last two weeks, our interschool sport teams have played a number of games against other schools in the district. Results from the last few weeks

Softball

Edens Landing 1 - Played 5 - Won 1 / Lost 4
Edens Landing 2 - Played 6 - Won 2 / Lost 4

Online Ordering

Our school has now introduced a great new online ordering system for the Tuckshop called FlexiSchools. This system allows parents and staff to place orders from home, work or school at any time. The payment is also done online, so less paper bags, cash and envelopes are sent via your student to school. As well as being convenient for parents, the online orders are much faster and easier for the tuckshop to process - so it makes everyone’s life a little easier. FlexiSchools is well established and tested, operating in hundreds of schools across Australia.

Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to the Flexischools website and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions, FlexiSchools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

http://www.flexischools.com.au

There are a variety of payment options supported, including Visa, MasterCard (credit and debit) and Bank Transfer. The system operates via a pre-paid account.

As you might be aware a few Fridays ago there was an issue with FlexiSchools and their website. Any problems with the actual website are not something I cannot do anything about. When I contacted FlexiSchools I got the same recorded message as everyone else. If there are ever any issues with accounts or orders not going through it is something that needs to be fixed via FlexiSchools.

The system is now available, so we look forward to seeing your next order online.

NEW Stop, Drop & Go

Attention Parents/Carers/Teachers/Pedestrians & Motorists,

Logan City Council, Edens Landing Police Beat, Education Queensland along with Transport and Main Roads have worked tirelessly together to improve issues identified at Edens Landing State School and I can gladly inform you that with the commencement of Term 4 there will be an additional Stop, Drop & Go Zone operating on Castile Crescent. This zone is significant in size and will allow direct access into the school.

The same legislative requirements will apply to this additional Stop, Drop & Go Zone. Loading Zone Passenger signs will be in place indicating the maximum 2 minute waiting time.

We request that all users of the Stop, Drop & Go Zones adhere to the tips outlined below to assist with using the zones to their full potential

  1. REMIND YOUR CHILDREN WHERE YOU ARE PICKING THEM UP FROM.
  2. DON’T ENTER THE STOP DROP & GO ZONE UNTIL THE BELL HAS RUNG.
  3. PARENTS/CARERS ARE REQUESTED TO STAY IN THEIR CARS.
  4. NO PARKING IN THE STOP DROP & GO ZONE.
  5. THE SAME RULES APPLY FOR MORNING DROP OFF.

To maximize the safety of children in and around our school zone there will be No Stopping signs and zone installed on Castile Crescent on the opposite side of the road to the Stop, Drop & Go zone on school days between the hours of 7am – 9am and 2pm – 4pm.

Edens Landing Police have been educating drivers in and around Edens Landing State School for an extended period of time about the Stop, Drop & Go legislative requirements and other additional road rules. Motorists found to be in breach of these road rules will be issued infringement notices either by Queensland Police Service or Logan City Council.

It is time that we all took a stand, took responsibility for our driving behaviours and become united in relation to this matter. Edens Landing Police request that we all show respect and courtesy to other road users and adhere to the legislative requirements placed upon us as licence holders driving on our roads.

Infringements that may be issued by Queensland Police Service at this time are:

Other vehicle stop in loading zone for more than 2 minutes (drop off or pick up passengers) $48
Stop contrary to ‘No Stopping’ sign $48
Stop contrary to continuous yellow line $48

These infringements can and will be issued on the spot to drivers found committing these offences. From research I have conducted and in my opinion we are extremely fortunate to be able to have these resources and options made available to use with an extremely healthy relationship and joint partnership in place with all key stakeholders.

If you have any questions about this matter please do not hesitate in contacting me directly on 3884 2050 or EdensLanding.Beat@police.qld.gov.au
