Principal’s News

Jingeri (Hi) ELSS families and community,

As we approach the finish to 2022, it is timely to remember the ‘GROWTH’ seen within the school and in the community. I have seen growth in student learning, teacher practice, staff leadership, parent support and student engagement. We need to stay the course and continue to be partners in learning.

Thank you for your support to live out the Edens Landing Way-

Mission – Engage, Inspire and Empower EVERY student to a life of choice not chance
Vision – Positive Relationships and High Expectations for EVERY student succeeding.
Expectations – Safe, Respectful, Learner
Motto- Soar to Success

The Edens Landing Way can be seen in the images below. The colour run was a highlight of the year for many staff, students and families. Just over $14,000 raised for a range of upgrades. Just look at the smiles on the faces below. The Magic Of Music saw over 100 students demonstrate their passion and skill.

Some of our recent events- Prep play dates, Evacuation Drill, Magic of Music, Beach Safety workshops, Colour Run Explosion, White Ribbon Day, Swimming year 1 and 2, P&C meeting, Teacher V Student touch football challenge, ELSS Carols and Community Awards Ceremony.

Celebrate ELSS Success in 2022, as a whole school community we had significant success. Let’s recap-

  • Increase in: students passing English at the school. student learning and growth in every classroom. students in full school uniform. messages of thanks and support from parents, families and community partners. connection with our community partners.

  • A calmer, cleaner and happier school for our students.

The ELSS 2022 improvement plan has the watermark GROWTH. We will focus on building a positive culture for learning with focussed teaching and learning for EVERY student to succeed at ELSS = GOAL is 75%+ A-C English in semester 2. The three major priorities for 2022 are Reading, Curriculum Access and Culture.

School events Coming up- Star of the school, Art museum block, Volunteer thank you morning tea, Yr 6 big day out, Meet the teacher, Graduation, Swimming Carnival, Rewards Day, END of Year.

Reminders-

  • BULLYING- NO WAY is EVERYDAY at ELSS. ELSS process for how our students are to respond to an incident: TALK-WALK-REPORT. If you have concerns of an incident, please contact your child’s classroom teacher, if needed it will progress to Deputy Principal. Thanks for your support of the process. Edens Landing SS does not tolerate Bullying.
  • Our 2023 Student resource scheme (SRS) is active to supply all the resources needed for your child to learn next year. The total cost is $220. We have ensured high quality products, device apps and equipment. As the SRS purchase is in bulk, we have significant savings as this will cost a family over $700 to purchase individually.
  • BUS and BASKETBALL COURTS- Students are to be supervised, in school uniform, when across the road in the basketball courts before and after school. We have received reports of students being rude to other children and adults. Further reports about negative behaviour on the school bus. Mitch, our adopt-a-cop, has spoken with numerous students to speak and act respectfully.

Attendance at ELSS – Our target is 90%. We currently sit at 88%

Parents are a child’s first teacher. School staff are a child’s second teacher. Our learning walls are a child’s third teacher. Together we are Partners in learning.

Deputy Principal’s News

From the Year 3 Team

We have been studying numbers up to 10,000 this year and have talked about the value of each of the digits. The students have worked out the next number in a pattern ascending and descending from a given number.

You can assist your child with some practice of patterns as you drive to school- or some other time that works!

Money makes the World go around! …. or so the saying goes!

We have been studying money – what notes /coins we need to make some simple amounts of money.

Hands on using of money assists every child with this part of maths…. who knows how this area of study will change in the future!

Time is studied up to the minute in Year 3. This is again a skill that can be further developed if children are used to talking about time – on digital AND analogue clocks.

From the Year 4 Team

During mathematics lessons this term we have been exploring place value in the tens of thousands, decimals and fractions, measurement (temperature), multiplication and related division facts, money and mapping. Students have been engaging in daily mathematical warm ups and weekly maths rotations to help solidify their learning and put their skills into context.

It is encouraged students continue using their knowledge and apply it in real world situations. Some suggestions for at home are:

  • Practising times tables in the car on the way to or home from school and discussing their related division fact (e.g. 6 x 7 = 42, the turnaround division for this is 42 ÷ 6 = 7)
  • Helping students make small purchases at the shops and calculating the change they will receive
  • Practising following and giving directions (e.g. take 10 steps forward, make a half turn clockwise, walk a further 4 steps forward = you are now at your book shelf)

From the Year 5 Team

The year 5 Mathematics assessment for term 4 involves creating a simple financial budget for providing ice-cream sodas to the class, using a range of problem-solving skills which includes addition, subtraction and multiplication. The classes will have a chance to test out their budgets on party day. Students will also be assessed this term on their understanding of the units of measurement used for capacity and mass. Collecting, analysing and displaying data using a variety of graphs will also be assessed along with students’ understanding of 24-hour time.

From the Year 6 Team

This term in Maths, Year 6 have been learning about chance and data, with a focus on probability. They played a game of ‘Dice Difference’ as a class and then collected and analysed experimental data. The students then calculated and listed all the possible outcomes of the game and graphed the results. They also used the data to decide whether the game was fair and explained their reasoning. The students then made recommendations of changes they would make to make the game fairer.

From the Specialist Team

Japanese

Year 5 Semester 2 - How do we celebrate?

Assessment

In semester 2, students will create a short informative and descriptive text about Japan’s famous Cherry Blossom Festival. They will choose 4 photos which illustrate different aspects of the celebration and caption these with simple sentences to share the facts they have learned in the target language. Students will need to demonstrate knowledge of unit specific vocabulary and correct use of familiar verbs and their associated particles.

Year 6 Semester 2 – Tabemasho (Let’s Eat)

Assessment

In semester 2, students will demonstrate knowledge they have learned about the language and culture associated with sharing meals in the target language. They will plan and rehearse a restaurant dialogue to communicate their needs and wants in a simulated restaurant ordering situation. Students will prepare with a scaffolded script and may refer to illustrated menus and the classrooms learning wall for support.

Deputy Principal’s News

The summer break is just around the corner and the children will be wanting to play, swim and chill out – as do the adults. Please take a moment to make sure your children are familiar with the basic safety rules – road rules, sun safe rules, and keeping together at the shopping centre.

I know what it is like to take children to the beach or park and forget to pack everything – such as mosquito repellent or water bottles! You may find it easier to have a backpack for outdoors all ready with sunscreen, spare hats, hand sanitiser, water bottles and quick snacks, that you can just grab on your way out, or leave in the car.

Even though we practise our road rules often, it is a great time to discuss why we wear a helmet when cycling or scootering, how cars don’t always see children before they cross the road, and the need to use pedestrian crossings.

https://raisingchildren.net.au/school-age/safety

Students have opportunities to develop understandings of:

  • Number and place value — count forwards and backwards to 20 from different starting points; represent quantities; compare quantities, match number names, numerals and quantities; identify parts in a collection; identify addition; join collections; represent addition experiences; make equal groups.
  • Location and transformation — describe position, describe direction.
  • Patterns and algebra — identify, copy, continue and describe growing patterns, describe equal quantities
  • Data representations and interpretation — identify questions, answer yes/no questions, use data displays to answer simple questions.
  • Exploring duration by comparing how activities take. We sequence events across the day and we can ask questions and collect the answers to help us make decisions.

Maths Term 4 – Year 1

Learning Intention:

We are learning to carry out simple addition and subtraction using a range of strategies

Success Criteria:

I can…

  • recognise if a word problem is asking me to add or subtract
  • use concrete materials to represent and solve problems
  • write number sentences to represent a problem and solution
  • use number lines to solve addition and subtraction problems
  • use double tens frames to represent and solve problems
  • use the part-part-whole strategy to represent and solve problems

Example:

At the shops I got 6 apples. My brother got 5 bananas. How many pieces of fruit do we have altogether?

6 + 5 = 11

Learning Intention:

We are learning to recognise, model, write and order numbers to 100, locate numbers on a number line and partition numbers using place value.

Success Criteria:

I can…

  • identify numbers that come before and after a chosen number
  • represent a chosen number using concrete materials and drawings
  • partition a chosen number into tens and ones and explain my thinking
  • represent a chosen number in parts, using the part-part-whole strategy
  • locate numbers on a number line and explain my thinking

Year 2 Math Assessment

Following our Math unit plan, children undertake assessment tasks so that teachers can gauge the degree of learning that each child has achieved. Math is not just about calculating the ‘right’ answer. It is also about being able to demonstrate use of effective strategies to arrive at the answer. Some children can work out the answer but have trouble explaining how. Of course, in Math, there can often be more than one way to achieve a correct answer. Some children can demonstrate beginning use of effective strategies but don’t quite arrive at the correct answer. This however, shows the teacher that such children are on the right ‘course’ but just may need more practice.

Here are a couple of snippets taken from assessments recently undertaken.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING AT ELSS

What is Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)?

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework that promotes positive behaviour across a school and helps schools develop safe and supportive learning environments.

Schools which implement the PBL framework make sure all students are explicitly taught the expected behaviours and establish clear and consistent boundaries. Staff take a proactive, preventative approach to ensure all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to be successful at school. Student outcomes are monitored so identified students can receive additional support when needed, and a minority of students can access intensive support to enable them to engage successfully at school.

PBL and Bullying Prevention

PBL is based on the belief that all students should have access to the supports needed to prevent the development and continued use of problem behaviours, including bullying. PBL places emphasis on the behaviour rather than the student, therefore, labels such as “bully” or “victim” are considered unhelpful, with the focus instead directed towards describing behaviour specifically and in relation to the setting in which it occurs (for example, “name calling in the playground before school”).

PBL takes a school-wide approach to bully prevention by teaching:

  • what bullying looks like
  • what to do before and when bullying behaviour is seen
  • how to teach others what to do
  • how to reduce the effectiveness of bullying through establishment of a positive school environment.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture. The framework assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for all students.

Edens Landing State School has CC (Captain Courageous) as our mascot. He helps to remind students of our expectations.

Weeks 9 to 10 Term 4:

Edens Landing is a PBL School. This means that we explicitly teach students about the behaviour we want to see repeated. The rules are explained on assembly each Friday and teachers follow up with lessons and activities in class. To finish the year all teachers will be revisiting our school expectations – I am Safe, I am Respectful, I am a Learner.

Edens Landing Police Beat

The most wonderful time of the year is almost here! Christmas is just around the corner. Every child deserves to experience some Christmas magic. Unfortunately, some children may not be able to.

This year, Edens Landing Police Beat is asking for your help.

YFS is a locally run Logan based charity, that provides support to vulnerable children. This could be children who are victims of domestic violence situations, homelessness and other vulnerabilities. YFS have been providing support to the Logan community since 1983.

Edens Landing Police Beat’s Christmas Light Display will be operating every night from 1 November 2022 from 6pm.

We are asking for your help and generosity in gift donations that will be donated to YFS, to provide children who may be in a vulnerable situation this Christmas season, and spread a little bit of that Christmas magic to them. Gift donations may be left under the Christmas tree at Edens Landing Police Beat drop off point, which will be delivered to YFS throughout the Christmas period so that they can give these children some positive Christmas experiences. The following requests have been made by YFS, to allow for an effective process:

Please do not wrap the gifts, as they need to be checked for suitability by YFS as to how best distribute (Gift bags are suitable). Please no weapons, or mock weapons. Please only new items in packaging (for health and safety reasons).

While donations will be accepted during the light display each night, you may also make donations at any time during the day at the Edens Landing Police Beat.

For more information on YFS and the work they do, or if you are in a vulnerable situation and in need of assistance, please check out their website at YFS.org.au.

We thank you for any contribution you can make to help these vulnerable children’s Christmas experience, and hope you enjoy the light display this year at Edens Landing Police Beat.

Merry Christmas,
Senior Constable Mitch Collins.
